Tsawwassen's Duncan Holmes was named one of the winners of the B.C. Association of Farmers' Markets'
first-ever Farmers Appreciation Week Poetry Contest.
"I was totally delighted," said Holmes when asked for his reaction, "especially because I live in South Delta
which is such a agriculture centre of action." Holmes was named the winner for the Metro Vancouver, Coast &
Mountains region for his entry, A Farmer's Ode to Spring!, a poem about the hope of springtime.
Holmes is a food writer, gardener and has a "great love of the land."
"I think we're blessed here with what we've got, so we've got to look after it. Agriculture is at the heart of what
this part of the Lower Mainland is all about."
He also has editorial cartoons published in the Optimist.
Contest winners receive a $50 gift certificate to a farmers' market of their choice, The
Complete Book of Home Preserving from Bernardin, social media promotion and publication in print media,
including B.C. Organic Grower magazine, according
to the association's website.
Farmers' Appreciation Week, which ran from Sept. 8 to 15, celebrates B.C. farmers, agriculture and food.
